The Zero-Sum Illusion - what's in it!

By Grant Ballard-Tremeer, PhD • Author

My book, The Zero-Sum Illusion is out as an ebook now!

It is a strange thing to write a book for years and then wake up on the morning it goes into the world. Everything shifts on the inside, because the thing you have been carrying is no longer only yours.

Today the book is out.

And I wanted you, the people who have been reading this newsletter along the way, to be among the first to hear it from me directly.

We have been treating the world as a place where for one person to win, another has to lose. In our arguments, in our meetings, in our marriages, in our public discourse, we have quietly organised almost every difficult moment around a logic of winners and losers. And we have been paying the price without quite knowing what we were paying for.

The Zero-Sum Illusion is my attempt to name that mistake precisely, and to show that a different way is not only possible but teachable.

I want to tell you a little about what is actually in it, because I know some of you have been waiting a long time.

The book argues three things I have watched hold true across more than twenty-five years of work in some of the world’s hardest rooms:

  • Empathy is not softness. It is the most strategically valuable form of intelligence you can develop.

  • Letting go of the need to control how others see you is not weakness. It is the moment you reclaim your own authority.

  • The exhaustion most of us have quietly accepted as the cost of adult life is not the cost of adult life. It is the cost of a specific kind of thinking we can learn to interrupt.

The book is built as a practical toolkit, organised around a framework I call Me, Them, Us:

The inner work of grounding yourself, The outer work of understanding others, and The collaborative work of building something neither side could build alone.

Each chapter ends with specific practices you can use in the next difficult conversation, at work or at home.

What I hope the book does for you.

I hope it names patterns you have felt for a long time and never quite had words for. I hope it gives you a small set of practices you can start using this week and I hope, more than anything, that it slowly changes what your closest relationships and hardest conversations feel like a year from now.

I wrote it for leaders and changemakers, but also for anyone who has felt the low-grade exhaustion of the win-lose default and wondered whether there is a way to live and work differently. There is.

The practical details.

The Kindle ebook is available today, at a launch price of £4.79. That price holds for the next two weeks, until the paperback launches on September 1. On that date, both formats settle at their standard price.

You can start reading tonight.

If you have been reading this newsletter for a while, thank you. Genuinely. You are the reason a book like this gets written and finished. And the book is genuinely for you.

With thanks,

Grant

PS. If you're one of the wonderful people who already supported me in the crowdfunding campaign some months ago, your signed print copies and other perks will be made available next month. The book is not yet available in print.
